Why does Keyshot take forever to select multiple object at once?

Hi,

I’m using Keyshot 2023. Selecting multiple objects at once is a nightmare in the software. It take 20 minutes before selecting the objects in the scene. I did some researches before, where some suggested to turn off the selection outline in the preferences. While I had success before in Keyshot 11 with this method, it seems that it doesn’t work in the 2023 version, and it’s very irritating. This really seems to be a software bug than anything else as I don’t remember this issue was present in much earlier versions of Keyshot. Any help/guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Do you select by clicking the objects themselves or using the scene tree? Or does it make a difference if you select them using scene tree or geometric view or with performance mode enabled?

For me selecting objects is instantly but it could maybe platform/os/memory/scene related? I would say it must be a bug but for someone to try to replicate the issue more info is needed I think.

I guess that Emil use Shift + LMB for window selection.
In my experiences over many KeyShot versions, in very large scenes with multiple objects in depth (that means, there are many parts behind the parts in front of the camera so KS had to collect stagged objects but with a different location in the structure) the selection take some time.
IMHO I suggest to use the scene tree a bit more. For example:
I would select one part that’s facing the camera - this object would be selected in the scene tree. Then select the parent group to select the subassembly (if the top assembly is structured as usual in well engineered assemblies) or climb up the structure in the scene tree [I add a simple trick at the bottom of this answer]. Now isolate these parts with solo mode and then use the selection window.

Hope that will speed up the process a bit

PS: [the trick I promised and some customers use for years] - 1st disable the standard short keys for up, down, left and right (you can change the brightness of the environment with other key combination or via slider / value). 2nd select a part in the render port. 3rd select the same part in the scene tree that is selected / highlighted (so KeyShot activates this dialog / box) and the use left to select it’s parent node or close a group or use right to expand or up and down to navigate in the tree. This is just simple like the navigation in a folder structure expanded in a file explorer

@marco.wodarz I also use mostly the scene tree to select items. I also did a feature request to give coloured labels to items in the scene tree (like Photoshop does with it’s layers). Sometimes there are a few things you’ve to change more often and for me the coloured labels can help to find certain things more quickly.

BTW, I saw the KeyShot Stuttgart presentation, nice! Was also a good way to learn a bit of German again

@oscar.rottink, colored labels is an excellent feature request!

This has been a request I’ve seen pop up dating back to like… 2016. I still think it’d be nice.

Keyshot can sometimes take a hot minute to select multiple objects at once because it’s crunching all that high-quality rendering power. But hey, good things come to those who wait, right? So just sit back, relax, and let Keyshot do its thing, it’ll be worth the wait!
